Favorable Conditions Shortened Project Duration

INDIANAPOLIS – Illinois Street between McCarty and South Streets will reopen today after Citizens Energy Group completed construction work associated with the Lower Pogue’s Run Tunnel, which is part of the DigIndy Tunnel System. The closure was originally expected to last until this summer. Thanks to favorable construction conditions aided by milder than expected weather, the street will reopen before this evening’s rush hour.

The DigIndy Tunnel System, a 28-mile network of underground tunnels that will be complete by 2025, will nearly eliminate sewer overflows in Marion County. The first 10-mile segment of the tunnel system opened in December 2017 and has already prevented more than 1.6 billion gallons of sewage from flowing into local waterways.
