Traffic Restrictions Expected to Last Through the Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group has closed the easternmost two travel lanes of Pennsylvania Street between Washington and Maryland Streets to repair a more-than-100-year-old failing clay sewer lateral.

Citizens is coordinating utility locations and has mobilized a contractor to complete the repairs. Work will continue around the clock throughout the weekend until work is complete. Pennsylvania Street is expected to be fully reopened by the Monday morning commute.

Citizens inspected all sewer mains in the downtown mile-square area in 2018. This failing lateral connects a downtown business to a 24-inch brick sewer main, which remains intact and did not fail. The problem was identified late yesterday after a depression was reported on Pennsylvania Street and Citizens inspected the sewer with a closed-circuit video camera.
