Vital Water Supply Intake Project Continues
INDIANAPOLIS - Citizens Energy Group announced today the Canal Tow Path section between 30th Street and Interstate 65 will reopen on August 6.
The tow path has been closed since March 2 due to ongoing construction of a new water intake at 3400 White River Parkway Drive. Cyclists and others using the tow path in this area are now being directed to detour around the construction via sidewalks along Michigan Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Streets and then on other city streets.
“We had originally planned to keep the tow path closed until December, but we have been able to accelerate the construction process enough to have the path back open on August 6. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this important project to ensure adequate water supply for the community,” said Jeff Willman, Vice President, Water Operations for Citizens.
Cyclists and others using the tow path should be aware that when the tow path reopens it will be fenced on both sides until construction is complete later this year. Additionally, there will be occasional temporary trail delays during the day as workers continue construction.
Citizens is constructing the water intake to allow 70 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to be transferred from the White River to the Central Canal for use at Citizens’ White River Treatment Plant. This new intake will be used to supplement water supply to the canal during dry weather and provide an additional supply source for the canal.
