Scammers May Target Customers Over the Phone, Online, or In Person

INDIANAPOLIS – The holiday season is here, and Citizens Energy Group encourages customers to be aware of potential scams—over the phone, online, and in person.

Scammers may call or email and threaten disconnection of service, ask for immediate payment, or tell you that you overpaid and need to provide personal financial information to receive a refund. Scammers also may seek payment via specific methods such as gift cards and wire transfers. Citizens employees never ask for personal information over the phone or email, nor do we request payment using a specific method. Instead, we offer a variety of ways to pay so you can choose the method that’s best for you.

If you have questions about the validity of the identity of someone claiming to be a Citizens employee, or about the nature of their outreach, please call Citizens at (317) 924-3311.

When a Citizens employee comes to your door, they will be wearing a uniform and/or carrying an ID that identifies them as an employee. Before letting someone claiming to be from Citizens into your home or onto your property, you should ask to see their Citizens ID. Our employees will never seek payment in person.

If you have questions about the validity of the person’s identity or the nature of their visit, please call Citizens at (317) 924-3311. If you feel unsafe or the person is unable to properly identify themselves as a Citizens employee, you should call 911 immediately.
