City of Indianapolis to Celebrate Park’s Centennial in July
INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group was announced today as the presenting sponsor of the Frederick Douglass Park Centennial Celebration.
On July 7, 2021, the City of Indianapolis will kick off a multi-day celebration commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Frederick Douglass Park, located in the historic Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood at Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue and East 25th Street.
The 43-acre Frederick Douglass Park was established during segregation for the Martindale neighborhood’s African American community in 1921. Over the past century, the park has become a popular place for community meetings, city basketball games and traditional family gatherings, as well as the home of the historic Frederick Douglass Park Golf Course, which opened in 1926 as the only golf course in the nation named for an African American.
Jeffrey Harrison, Citizens President & CEO, said, “In January 2019, Citizens Energy Group committed to investing time, talent, resources and funding to make much-needed improvements to Frederick Douglass Park over the next three years through our annual Sharing the Dream event, a multi-day community service project that gives employees an opportunity to serve their community and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We are proud to continue our commitment to Indy Parks, and Frederick Douglass Park in particular, by serving as the presenting sponsor of this summer’s centennial celebration.”
“The City of Indianapolis and Indy Parks are thrilled to celebrate Frederick Douglass Park’s centennial this summer,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “We’re equally thrilled to partner with Citizens Energy Group in observing this important milestone in the life of a park with such a rich and meaningful history. Thank you to Citizens for your continued commitment to improving Indy Parks facilities through Sharing the Dream.”
Indy Parks is asking the community to celebrate Frederick Douglass Park and its upcoming centennial anniversary.
