Please Limit Lawn Watering to Once or Twice Per Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group is encouraging customers to conserve water and reduce lawn irrigation during the current hot dry weather the area is experiencing.

“Water conservation is very important during hot dry summer weather and reduced lawn irrigation is the most effective way to conserve. Not only is it the environmentally responsible thing to do, but it also will help to lower your monthly water bills,” said Jeff Willman, Vice President, Water Operations for Citizens. “In addition, lowering peak demand for water will reduce stress on the water distribution system, thus minimizing costly and wasteful water main breaks.”

During hot dry weather events, approximately 40-70% of all drinking water produced in Central Indiana is used for lawn irrigation purposes. This level of water use creates challenges for utility operations and reduces the amount of water available for people, pets, schools, businesses and economic growth. The utility suggests the following ways to conserve:

  • Limit lawn watering to 1-2 times per week - Most Indiana lawns only need watering 1-2 times per week. Excessive watering of lawns and other plants results in shallow roots, weed growth, fungus and stormwater runoff that can impact local streams.
  • Water lawns and other plants early – If you decide to irrigate, 4 to 7 a.m. is the best time to water lawns and other plants to reduce evaporation. Watering at midday results in as much as 30 percent water loss due to evaporation.
  • Use the garden hose properly - Sweep driveways, sidewalks and steps rather than hosing them off. Check your garden hose connections for leaks. If your hose connection leaks at the spigot or at a connection with another hose, replace the nylon or rubber hose washer and tighten the connection.
  • Ensure appliances are full - Only run the dishwasher and clothes washers when they are full and use a water-saver cycle if you have one.
