Up to three weeks of closure for utility relocations will prepare the site for future IndyGo rapid transit construction.
INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group today announced the coming closure of the intersection between Emerson Avenue and Washington Street, located along IndyGo’s upcoming Blue Line route, a 24-mile bus transit corridor running east and west on Washington Street in Marion County. Utility crews will close the intersection on or after Monday, October 27, for up to three weeks to complete the relocation of water utility infrastructure. These relocations are required by the upcoming construction of Blue Line roadway infrastructure at this location.
The full road closure will be contained to the immediate intersection of Emerson Avenue and Washington Street. Local access will be maintained to adjacent neighborhood streets and businesses. Signs will direct east- and westbound through-traffic on Washington Street to detour on Southeastern Avenue, via Arlington Avenue. Signs will direct north- and southbound through-traffic on Emerson Avenue to detour on Arlington Avenue, via 10th Street and Southeastern Avenue.
In addition to the vehicular detours described here, Citizens encourages transit-users to find bus detour information on the Blue Line Now page of IndyGo’s website.
At the initiation of the full intersection closure for utility relocations, IndyGo expects to begin construction on the segment of Washington Street between Emerson Avenue and Colorado Avenue. This construction will occur simultaneously with the temporary full closure at Emerson Avenue; IndyGo’s construction is not expected to fully close the roadway, though work will likely continue through late 2025. IndyGo makes resources available to local organizations and business owners near construction zones, including “We are Open” signage through a community tool kit.
Citizens Energy Group has worked to communicate construction details regarding the temporary full closure of Emerson Avenue at Washington Street to nearby business owners and community institutions.
