Citizens Energy Group and Partners Investing $100,000 in Upgrades
INDIANAPOLIS – The clubhouse at the historic Frederick Douglass Park Golf Course will undergo a transformation on Thursday and Friday during Citizens Energy Group’s annual Sharing the Dream event, a multi-day community service project that gives employees a chance to serve Central Indiana and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Employee volunteers will collectively donate hundreds of hours of their time during the event, and Citizens and its generous partners will contribute around $100,000, either monetarily or in-kind.
Located in the Martindale-Brightwood community, this 9-hole golf course opened in 1926 as the only golf course in the nation named for an African-American. The course has hosted greats such as heavyweight boxing champion Joe Lewis and renowned golfers Ted Rhodes, Charlie Sifford and even a young Tiger Woods. The Frederick Douglass Park Golf Course clubhouse not only serves golfers, but also is a popular meeting place for politicians, business owners and civic groups.

By choosing this site for our 2020 project, we continue to leave our legacy by supporting Indy Parks’ mission of connecting communities by providing places and experiences that inspire healthy living, social engagement and a love of nature. I couldn’t be more thrilled that our employees continue serving our community through volunteerism and am appreciative of our in-kind contributions from our strategic partners.”
Improvements to the facility will include installing a security system; upgrading all lighting to LED; updating flooring; installing audio-visual equipment; replacing furniture; reframing historical photos; cleaning and servicing HVAC and other equipment; making safety upgrades; and much more. Citizens will also return in the spring to perform beautification work outside the facility, as well as update ADA structures.

On Monday, January 20, Indy Parks and Frederick Douglass Golf Course staff will reopen the newly updated clubhouse for a community open house from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., giving the community a chance to view the new facility and enjoy refreshments.
