Repair of Century Old Sewer Line Underway
Citizens Energy Group estimates the intersection of Ohio and Pennsylvania Streets in downtown Indianapolis could be closed until next Friday, July 13 as crews make repairs to a more than 100-year-old, 24-inch diameter sewer line that failed on Wednesday evening creating a sinkhole. As a result of the sinkhole that has developed, the Citizens crew must carefully excavate the site to ensure the safety of workers and continued service from multiple other utility lines located above the sewer that must be repaired.
“Citizens appreciates the patience of downtown commuters as we work as safely and quickly as possible to repair the sewer and open this busy intersection,” said Tim Blagsvedt, Director, Wastewater Collection for Citizens Energy Group.
Each year Citizens is making important investments in the local sewer system to reduce the number of sewer failures such as the one that occurred this week. Since 2011, the utility has invested more than $1.2 billion in the local sewer system to replace aging infrastructure and for the ongoing construction of the DigIndy Tunnel System, a 28-mile network of deep tunnels that has begun to prevent sewer overflows to area waterways.
