INDIANAPOLIS – Beginning in February, construction on DigIndy Tunnel System project sites near Pleasant Run will temporarily close or impact several roadways on the south and east sides of the city for various lengths of time.

The operational portions of the DigIndy Tunnel System have to date prevented more than 6 billion gallons of sewage from entering local waterways. When fully complete by the end of 2025, the system will lead to a generational shift in the health of Indianapolis’ waterways and their adjacent communities.

Three different construction sites will see temporary road closures due to DigIndy work beginning in February:

  • Beginning on or after Saturday, February 1, E Pleasant Run Parkway N Drive will close at its intersection with St. Paul Street. Local access to adjacent homes will be maintained. Signs will direct through-traffic from E Pleasant Run Parkway N Drive to detour around the closure using parallel thoroughfares, connecting via Churchman and S Keystone avenues. This closure will be in place for up to four weeks.
  • Beginning on or after Monday, February 10, St. Clair Street will close at its intersection with N Whittier Place, located on the north side of Ellenberger Park. Local access to adjacent homes will be maintained. Signs will direct through-traffic from E St. Clair Street to detour around the closure using N Ritter Avenue, E 9th Street, and Ellenberger Parkway E Drive. Crews expect this closure will be in place for up to two weeks.
  • Beginning on or after Monday, February 17, State Avenue will close at its intersection with E Pleasant Run Parkway N Drive (near Orange Street). Local access to adjacent homes will be maintained, though users of the Pleasant Run Trail will see a closure at the same site. Signs will direct through-traffic from State Avenue to detour west of the closure using thoroughfares including Prospect, Shelby, and Raymond streets. Signs will direct through-traffic from E Pleasant Run Parkway N Drive (as well as Pleasant Run Trail users) to detour via Pleasant Run Parkway S Drive, crossing the waterway at Linden Street and at Churchman Avenue. Crews expect this closure will be in place for approximately five months.

About the DigIndy Tunnel System

The DigIndy Tunnel System is a 28-mile network of 18-foot diameter deep rock tunnels being built 250 feet beneath the city. Along with associated projects in the combined sewer system and at two advanced wastewater treatment plants, this $2 billion program is Indy’s solution to significantly reducing historical overflows from the combined sewer system into area waterways, keeping the utility and the City of Indianapolis in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Now more than a decade in the making, completed portions of the DigIndy Tunnel System have prevented more than 6 billion gallons of sewage from entering local waterways. Construction will conclude and the entire system will be operational in 2025.
