Citizens Celebrates 10 Years of Sharing the Dream by Returning to Brookside Park
INDIANAPOLIS – More than 300 Citizens Energy Group employees will spend Thursday and Friday making improvements to the Brookside Park Family Center as part of Citizens’ 10th Sharing the Dream event, a multi-day community service project that gives employees a chance to serve Central Indiana and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Citizens President & CEO Jeffrey Harrison said, “Brookside Park is a special place to Citizens as it was the site of our first Sharing the Dream event in 2009. Since then, we have significantly improved our processes and strengthened our vendor partnerships, allowing us to make a greater impact on projects we undertake. That’s why it only seems appropriate to celebrate 10 years of Sharing the Dream by returning to the place where it all started.”
Brookside Park is a 108-acre municipal park on the near-eastside of Indianapolis, just north of the Rural-Sherman neighborhood. Park amenities include a swimming pool, family recreation center, tennis and basketball courts, fields, playgrounds, shelters and a disc golf course. Throughout the two-day service project, volunteers will spend time painting walls, installing new lighting, refurbishing the auditorium and stage, expanding the kitchen area, moving the reception desk to a more visible location and much, much more. Citizens is also currently doing work in the park as part of its Upper Pogue’s Run CSO project. As part of that initiative, we are making enhancements to the park’s grounds, including adding trees, extending a portion of Pogue’s Run Trail and restoring the disc golf course.
“Indy Parks’ staff is working hard to preserve the historic nature of Brookside Park and to make it the best place to visit in Indy,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Citizens’ improvements will be greatly appreciated by staff and park visitors. Completion of the project will go a long way toward helping Indy Parks achieve its mission of connecting communities by providing places and experiences that inspire healthy living, social engagement and a love of nature.”
Sharing the Dream begins Thursday and wraps up Friday. On Monday, January 15, Indy Parks will reopen the Brookside Park Family Center for a community open house, giving residents a chance to tour the facility and see the improvements. Citizens employees will donate nearly 2,000 hours of volunteer time during Sharing the Dream. Citizens and its generous partners will donate nearly $900,000 either monetarily or in-kind.
