More Than 300 Citizens Employees to Volunteer Over Two Days
INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group employees will spend Thursday and Friday making improvements to the Frederick Douglass Park Family Center at Citizens’ annual Sharing the Dream event, a multi-day community service project that gives employees a chance to serve Central Indiana and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Employee volunteers will donate nearly 1,500 hours of their time during Sharing the Dream, and Citizens and its generous partners will contribute about $600,000 either monetarily or in-kind.
Located in the Martindale-Brightwood community, the historic Frederick Douglass Park is home to a variety of youth sports leagues and activities. The Frederick Douglass Park Family Center offers users of all ages a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including sports, arts, holiday events, meal-service programs, after-school programs, summer camps and senior activities.

Over the course of the two-day service project, volunteers will spend time painting, cleaning, sorting and organizing. Other improvements to the facility include a renovated building entrance and new reception desk; new lighting; new carpet; upgraded sinks, cabinets and plumbing; creation of a dedicated technology area; installation of a video surveillance system; and much more.
“Bringing Sharing the Dream to Frederick Douglass Park is a great way to honor the legacy of service left by both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Frederick Douglass,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Our community is grateful to Citizens for making the first of many significant improvements coming to the park, and we’re anxious for the neighbors to be able to enjoy the facilities they deserve.”
On Monday, January 21, Indy Parks will reopen the newly updated Family Center for a community open house from 12-4 p.m., giving neighbors a chance to tour the facility and see the improvements.
