Construction locations on Ohio, Delaware, and North streets will each limit one or more travel lanes for several days.
INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group today announced three locations in downtown Indianapolis where work to upgrade manhole infrastructure on the city’s sewer system will impact traffic in the next two weeks. The majority of work will not require full road closures, but temporary lane restrictions of up to several days are expected along various streets in the downtown Mile Square. Regular maintenance and improvements to the city’s wastewater infrastructure ensures the long-term resilience and success of vital sanitary systems in Indianapolis.
Beginning on or after July 15, construction crews will begin work on a manhole installation along Ohio Street just west of its intersection with Illinois Street. The installation is expected to take about three work days, and it will temporarily restrict three travel lanes in the middle of Ohio Street. Parking along the curb lanes adjacent to the work zone will be prohibited to maintain a single traffic lane for motorists travelling east and west. Northbound Illinois Street traffic should not be impacted.
On or after July 15, crews will begin the installation of a new manhole on the northwest corner of the off-set intersection at Virginia Avenue and Delaware Street, near Hotel Indy; work is expected to take approximately five days. The western curb lane of northbound Delaware Street will be closed north of the intersection, which will therefore close access to travelers turning onto or from the 0-100 block of Virginia Avenue. This block of Virginia Avenue will be open to local traffic, but signs will detour through traffic around this block via routes north to Washington Street and south to Maryland Street.
Beginning on or after July 22, work near the intersection of North and Pennsylvania streets will take place for about five days. Two southbound lanes of Pennsylvania Street will be restricted at this intersection, including the bike lane. Signs will alert motorists to the lane restrictions and will detour the bike lane around the work zone, keeping bicycles on Pennsylvania Street protected by barricades. North Street will completely close between Pennsylvania and Meridian streets due to the excavations; signs will alert east- and westbound travelers to a detour around this closure.
Citizens Energy Group reminds travelers to heed all signage and to be especially careful when near an active construction zone. Citizens has worked in advance to communicate details of these construction project locations and the roadway restrictions to nearby property owners and stakeholders.
