More than three months of closures for required utility line relocations will prepare the site for IndyGo rapid transit construction.

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group today announced coming lane restrictions and closures of multiple portions of Washington Street in the Irvington neighborhood, located generally between Irvington and Arlington avenues. Utility relocation work here is required due to its location along IndyGo’s upcoming Blue Line route, a 24-mile bus transit corridor running east and west on Washington Street in Marion County. The Irvington neighborhood closures are expected to take more than three months, organized in the following phases:

  • Starting on or after March 16, the first phase involves a three-week closure of the Ritter & Washington Street intersection.

  • Expected on or after April 6, there will be a two-week closure of westbound traffic along Washington Street, between Layman Avenue and Audubon Road.

  • Crews will continue work at various smaller locations, restricting lanes within the segment of Washington Street between Irvington Avenue and Arlington Avenue.

An overview map is included at the bottom of this release.

Crews will make every effort to maintain local access to nearby businesses and buildings, but some impact on street parking is expected. Construction will also require temporary water outages to adjacent customers, which will be communicated in advance to those impacted.

Travelers and through-traffic looking to avoid delays in this area can detour using 10th Street, by way of Emerson and Arlington avenues.

In addition to the vehicular detours described here, Citizens encourages transit-users to find bus detour information on the Blue Line Now page of IndyGo’s website. IndyGo makes resources available to local organizations and business owners near construction zones, including “We are Open” signage through a community tool kit.

Coordinated with this construction to limit its impact, the Citizens Lead Service Line Replacement Program (LSLRP) will also replace any water service lines made of lead owned by the property owners in the construction zone at no additional cost to customers.

Citizens Energy Group has worked to communicate details regarding upcoming construction to nearby business owners and community institutions.
