UPDATE: Pennsylvania and Ohio Intersection Remains Closed

By Daniel Considine on 7/5/18 2:16 PM

Sewer Line Failure Cause of Sinkhole

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group has determined that the failure of a more than 100-year-old, 24-inch-diameter sewer line has caused the sinkhole that has developed at the intersection of Ohio and Pennsylvania Streets in downtown Indianapolis. A Citizens crew is currently on site planning the repair of the sewer main located 15 feet beneath the surface. Because the sewer failure is located below multiple other utility lines, which remain intact, Citizens must carefully excavate the area to ensure safety and continued utility service to the area. It is expected that the intersection will remain closed through the remainder of today and perhaps through the weekend. Further updates will be provided as more information is obtained.

Since 2011, Citizens has invested more than $1 billion in the area’s sewer system to replace aging infrastructure and to construct the ongoing DigIndy Tunnel System, a 28-mile network of deep tunnels that has begun to prevent sewer overflows to area waterways.
