Before starting your yard projects this summer check out these tips from ATI:

Body Mechanics

  • Get as close to your work as possible to avoid reaching.
  • Keep elbows close to your body.
  • Keep wrists/forearms in neutral (handshake position).
  • Instead of twisting at the waist step and turn to face your work.
  • Keep your back straight and your core tight when lifting or working below your waist.
  • To avoid squatting for long periods of time, use a stool or bench. Change positions between squatting and kneeling for ground work.
  • Limit overhead work to short durations. Use a ladder to get closer to your work.

Other important TIPS:

  • Spread the work out over several days or weeks.
  • Alternate tasks.
  • Start slowly and take frequent breaks.
  • Change position frequently.
  • Don't work until you wilt.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink more water than you think you need.
  • Stand up and stretch frequently.
