Before starting your yard projects this summer check out these tips from ATI:
Body Mechanics
- Get as close to your work as possible to avoid reaching.
- Keep elbows close to your body.
- Keep wrists/forearms in neutral (handshake position).
- Instead of twisting at the waist step and turn to face your work.
- Keep your back straight and your core tight when lifting or working below your waist.
- To avoid squatting for long periods of time, use a stool or bench. Change positions between squatting and kneeling for ground work.
- Limit overhead work to short durations. Use a ladder to get closer to your work.
Other important TIPS:
- Spread the work out over several days or weeks.
- Alternate tasks.
- Start slowly and take frequent breaks.
- Change position frequently.
- Don't work until you wilt.
- Stay hydrated. Drink more water than you think you need.
- Stand up and stretch frequently.
