The Journey to Safety Excellence

At Citizens Energy Group, we have a rich history of building and maintaining a culture of safety. We are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable utility services to our customers and providing a safe work environment for our employees. We also are focused on continuous improvement as an organization. As such, the Health, Safety & Security department seeks opportunities to continuously enhance safety.

When the National Safety Council launched its “Journey to Safety Excellence” program several years ago, it outlined four key pillars that are critical to achieving safety excellence based on research as well as best practices of world-class organizations:

  • Leadership and employee engagement: Fostering a culture in which safety is fully integrated into the business and is a shared responsibility among all employees
  • Safety management systems: Setting a framework of processes and procedures to ensure tasks are completed and objectives are met
  • Risk reduction: Striving to reduce the likelihood of an event and the severity of the injury that may result
  • Performance measurement: Having measurable goals to track progress using leading and lagging indicators

Some key milestones in Citizens’ journey to safety excellence include adding safety components to our Short-Term Incentive Plan (STIP) in 2003; formally adding Safety as a core value in 2007; and implementing monthly safety training requirements for all employees in 2014.

The Health, Safety & Security Department

Vision

We will fulfill the promise of the Trust by providing training and tools to maintain a safe and healthy workplace for all employees to be in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. We will promote a positive attitude towards safety and establish proactive safety objectives for all employees and contractors.

Mission

The Heath, Safety & Security Department is committed to providing the highest standard of safety for our employees, contractors, and communities. Provide leadership and require all employees to take responsibility and ownership for bringing safety to the job every day.

Values

Collaboration: We work as a team ensuring all employees understand they have an obligation to stop a job/task to prevent an unsafe incident from occurring and to report unsafe incidents or near misses.

Communication: We are dedicated to communicating across departments new regulations, policies, and processes within Health, Safety & Security to ensure the most accurate information is relayed to all employees.

Training: Provide safety training to employees ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and resources to perform their jobs safely, reduce injuries, accidents, and environmental impact, and ensure compliance.

Timeliness: Assure timely and thorough reporting and investigation of all incidents and the identification of corrective actions.

Confidentiality: We maintain the highest level of confidentiality with respect to information we encounter.

Safety Tip: Falls are 100% Preventable

Across the United States in 2020, 805 workers died in falls and 211,640 workers were injured badly enough to require days off work. Whether working from a ladder, a roof, or scaffolding, it's important to plan ahead, assess the risk, and use the right equipment.

  • Determine if working from a height is absolutely necessary or if there is another way to do the task safely.
  • Discuss the task with coworkers and determine what safety equipment is needed.
  • Make sure you are properly trained on how to use the equipment.
  • Scan the work area for potential hazards before starting the job.
