Utility relocations ahead of Indy DPW’s stormwater project will close Shelby Street’s intersections with Morris Street and then Prospect Street.

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Energy Group announced two coming road closures to Shelby Street in the Fountain Square neighborhood to relocate utility infrastructure in February and March, as required by ongoing stormwater infrastructure upgrades in this location via the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. Portions of Shelby Street between Morris Street and Cottage Avenue have been closed since December for the ongoing work.

Information on Indy DPW’s stormwater project, including recent fact sheets and public meeting presentations going back to 2023, can be found here.

Maps of the upcoming closures and detours are included at the bottom of this release.

Beginning on or after Monday, February 2, Shelby Street will close to vehicles and cyclists between Morris and Prospect streets, fully closing the Morris/Shelby intersection. Sidewalks will remain open along Shelby Street.

During the closure, signs will detour north- and southbound vehicular traffic from Shelby Street to parallel Keystone Avenue, by way of Prospect and Raymond streets. Signs will also detour eastbound vehicular traffic around the closure using East Street, McCarty Street, and Virginia Avenue. North- and southbound bicyclists will see signs advising the use of Pleasant Run Trail, Spruce Street, and Fletcher Avenue to detour; east- and westbound cyclists will be directed to detour via Spruce Street, Fletcher Avenue, Calvary Street, McCarty Street, and East Street.

After work at the Morris intersection is complete, crews will shift northward to work within the three-way intersection of Shelby Street, Prospect Street, and Virginia Avenue.

During this subsequent closure, signs will detour north- and southbound vehicular traffic to Keystone Avenue, by way of Raymond Street and English Avenue. Signs will also detour east- and westbound vehicular traffic to parallel English Avenue by way of East Street, McCarty Street, Calvary Street, and Keystone Avenue.

Work on these two construction locations is expected to last through the end of March, at which time Indy DPW will transition into full construction on their stormwater infrastructure improvement project.

Public transportation provider IndyGo advises that the Red Line (Route 90) will detour around the closure to the west, and both the Pleasant Run and Raymond bus platforms will be closed. The Red Line will share Route 13 bus stops on Raymond Street. Signage will be posted to notify passengers where they can access the bus. Bus detour information can be found here.
