Low Vitamin D levels can impact your blood sugars by increasing insulin resistance, meaning the body is unable to respond to or use the insulin that it’s producing. Many studies have looked at the role of vitamin D in diabetes and have shown an association between low levels of vitamin D and increased risk for type 2 diabetes and its complications. And what’s concerning is that low levels of vitamin D—also dubbed the “sunshine” vitamin—are all too common, especially among older adults and people of certain ethnic/racial groups.
Did you know?
- About 4 in 10 adults are vitamin D deficient, meaning they don’t get or make enough
- Vitamin D is found in just a few foods, such as fortified milk and cereals, egg yolks, and fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines
- It’s called the “sunshine” vitamin because we mainly get it from sunlight
- Low vitamin D can affect bone health and it’s also been linked to depression, low energy and certain skin and other conditions
It's important to note that many people with low vitamin D may not experience any symptoms. If you suspect you may have a vitamin D deficiency, consult with a healthcare professional for a blood test to confirm the diagnosis.

- I may be asked to make a list of medications (prescribed, over-the-counter and herbal supplements) so my provider can assist with the best medication regimen and watch for drug interactions.
- I am willing to share my blood sugar log/results with my provider and Northwind Pharmacy team with the goal of identifying opportunities and tips to help me feel my best.
- I may be asked to have labs drawn, such as HbA1c, to assess my blood sugar control over the past 2-3 months, as well as to complete a urine test to be sure my kidneys are in good health.
- I am committed to regular eye exams to help detect diabetic retinopathy and prevent major vision loss.
- I will create healthy lifestyle goals aimed to ensure exercise, healthy eating and tobacco cessation (if applicable) are priorities.
