Save your Knees: Injury Prevention from ATI

Kneeling is a great alternative to bending and stooping when trying to prevent back pain. The following tips can reduce wear and tear on your knees when your task is close to the ground:

  • Use a cushion, kneeling pad, or knee pads to reduce contact stress
  • Vary postures frequently to avoid static poses
  • Keep your back straight and hinge at the hip to lower height
  • Use a staggered half kneel when reaching forward to ease back strain
  • Sit rather than kneel
  • Take microbreaks to stretch out your legs

Kneeling Posture

  1. Tall kneel: kneeling on both knees. Can sit back while keeping chest up to lower height.
  2. Half kneel: one knee down, one at 90 degrees. Good choice when reaching forward. Switch knees frequently.
  3. Kneeling Assist: Sit instead of kneeling. Many products available such as gardening benches and buckets with lids
