Want to Go on a Gemba Walk?
Gemba is a Japanese term meaning “the real place,” the place where work is done. A Gemba Walk is the process in which leaders go to “the Gemba” to observe processes with their own eyes to learn, understand, ask questions, and to improve. By focusing on the work, listening to employees, and taking the time after a Gemba Walk to reflect on what action is needed, leaders foster a cooperative atmosphere in their department.
A Gemba Walk is not sitting behind a desk and making decisions on reports or casually walking through an area to make management presence known.
