For the sixth year, employees from Citizens Energy Group and Bowen Engineering spent a day working together to make an impact on the community.
The companies’ joint annual “United Way Day of Caring” was held Friday, August 24 at Flanner House, a community center that provides educational, social, and economic resources to help local residents become stable and self-sufficient.
After volunteering at Flanner House last year for the Day of Caring, Bowen and Citizens employees agreed to return to complete more projects. A recent expansion at the center that tripled its childcare capacity led to a need for playground improvements and expansion. Nearly 40 individuals from the two companies spent the day hauling and spreading mulch around playground equipment, landscaping near the building, and installing a sidewalk.
The annual community service day is a partnership between employees of Bowen Engineering and Citizens who work together frequently, as well as members of Citizens’ United Way team. Thank you to Citizens employees who participated this year: Jim Allen, Jennifer Bailey, Breann Cooper, Adrianne Council, Paul Dicken, Mike Elliott, Olivia Hawbaker, Nick Helmuth, Brad Hostetler, Ed Malone, Jennifer Mentink, Brittany Meunier, Rich Newell, Justin Redman, Mandy Saucerman, and Molly Tilka.
“I enjoy volunteering,” said Council, Technical Specialist IV. “Small things like this matter. To provide a place where kids can play and have fun makes a difference.”
Alice Guynn, Child Development Center Director at Flanner House, (and sister of Patrick Guynn, Wastewater Collections Maintenance Technician, and cousin of Angela Guynn, Payroll Administrator) expressed her appreciation for the work done by Citizens and Bowen employees. “Not only is the playground a safe place for children to have fun, it’s also a catalyst for learning fine motor skills, problem solving, patience, and social skills,” she said.
