Citizens Energy Group Returns to Frederick Douglass Park

After making major renovations to Frederick Douglass Park’s Family Center in 2019, Citizens Energy Group returned to the Park for the 2020 Sharing the Dream event to transform the golf course clubhouse.

On January 16 and 17, more than 70 Citizens employees volunteered for the company’s 12th annual Sharing the Dream event to honor the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Citizens and our partnering contractors contributed approximately $100,000 worth of in-kind work and hundreds of hours of employee volunteer service. Improvements to the facility included installing a security system; upgrading lighting to LED; installing new flooring; installing audio-visual equipment; replacing furniture; reframing historical photos; cleaning and servicing HVAC and other equipment; implementing safety upgrades; and much more. A video featuring the transformation is posted on Citizens’ YouTube channel.

“The revitalization of the Frederick Douglass golf course clubhouse allows Citizens to expand upon our legacy while supporting Indy Parks’ mission of connecting communities to places and experiences that inspire healthy living, social engagement and a love of nature,” said President and CEO Jeffrey Harrison. “I couldn’t be more thrilled that our employees continue serving our community through volunteerism and I’m appreciative of the in-kind contributions from our partners.”

Although Bruce Cooley, Project Manager in Plant Engineering, has been employed at Citizens for less than a year, he had routinely heard about Sharing the Dream even before coming onboard. This year, he jumped at the chance to sign up to volunteer. “All who told me about Sharing the Dream were quick to note the impact the event has on the community we serve,” he said. “Citizens’ investment in the community is one of the things that attracted me to working here.”

Citizens’ employees will have another opportunity to return to Frederick Douglass Park in the spring to perform outdoor beautification work and update ADA structures in the spring.
