Citizens Energy Group teamed up with the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) on Saturday, May 7 for the “Badges for Burn Camp” event.

Water Distribution employees worked alongside IFD recruits to clean and repaint 300 Citizens-owned hydrants.

Now in its seventh year, Citizens provides paint, brushes, and other supplies from its current inventory for the annual effort. As a result, money that IFD would have spent for outsourcing hydrant painting is donated to Hoosier Burn Camp.

“We are excited about the opportunity to provide IFD with a fundraising mechanism that will ultimately pay the way for a child to attend Hoosier Burn Camp,” said Jeff Willman, Vice President of Water Operations. “At Citizens, we know the importance of home-heating safety and fire prevention. That is why it’s imperative that we make sure our hydrants are working properly and are highly visible so firefighters can do their jobs effectively.”

IFD and Citizens have enjoyed a longstanding partnership and vested interest in optimally maintained hydrants, which are a life-safety necessity for IFD personnel responding to a fire. This project is an opportunity for firefighters to get a close-up look at the hydrants outside of emergency situations and to learn more about the color-marking system and hydrant components.
