Citizens Energy Group employees are encouraged to participate in Car Free Day Indy on September 20. Find out how you can join in on the fun and catch a free ride with IndyGo. Plus, read up on the new rules of the road before the Red Line begins service September 1.

Be Car Free on September 20

The 4th Annual Car Free Day Indy will take place on Friday, September 20As a company with a commitment to sustainability, Citizens Energy Group encourages its employees to be car free/car-lite and minimize car usage through carpooling & vanpooling, riding transit, biking, or walking.

Being car free/car-lite allows you to:

  • Be more productive. When you’re participating in a carpool, vanpool, or riding transit, you can work, text, and post – things you can’t do when you’re driving.
  • Save money.Pay less for gas and parking, and reduce wear and tear on your vehicle.
  • Stay social. Carpooling and vanpooling will give you more time to spend with coworkers and friends instead of commuting or sitting in traffic alone.
  • Improve the environment. You can reduce your carbon footprint and help to improve the air quality in Indianapolis.

Car Free Day Indy is sponsored by Commuter Connect, Central Indiana’s rideshare program. To participate, all you need to do is pledge to be car free/car-lite on September 20 by filling out the pledge form at https://www.carfreedayindy.com/pledge/.

Once you pledge, you will receive a Commuter Connect Ticket on your mobile phone or tablet, and you’ll be entered to win great prizes. You’ll also be invited to attend Car Free Day Indy events:

  • The Morning Rush at Cummins Plaza, 7-9 a.m., with music by DJ Kyle Long and refreshments
  • The Lunch Rush on Monument Circle, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with music by The Doo! Band, and refreshments provided by Chick-fil-A

If you participate, please send a photo of yourself using alternate transportation to Jada Buchanan at jbuchanan@citizensenergygroup.com to post on Citizens’ social media pages.

Indy’s first rapid transit bus route, the Red Line, is set to begin service September 1. Rides on the Red Line will be free the entire month of September.

Car Free Day Indy is the perfect opportunity to try out this new rapid transportation option.

The Red Line will run from Broad Ripple through downtown Indy (passing Citizens’ General Office along Meridian Street) to the University of Indianapolis. The new buses run completely on battery, making the Red Line the first all-electric rapid transit line in the U.S., according to IndyGo.

All other IndyGo buses (non-Red Line) will be free to ride the first two weeks of the month.

Be Aware of New Traffic Rules Due to Red Line

Construction on the Red Line rapid transit bus route is nearing an end. That means changes to our roads and crosswalks, and new rules of the road.

One of the most significant changes is the installation of a median along the bus route. This median SHOULD NOT be driven over. The median, marked with yellow paint, is designed to prevent vehicles other than public safety and IndyGo vehicles from traveling in or across the “bus only” lanes.

Left turns are only permitted at signaled intersections on College Avenue and Meridian Street. Please keep this rule in mind while driving along the bus route, and as you are entering and exiting Citizens Energy Group’s General Office. The median should not be crossed to enter the employee or customer parking lots. The employee lot can be entered from Meridian Street ONLY if going south, or from either 21st Street or Illinois Street. The customer lot can be entered from Meridian Street ONLY if going south, or from Illinois Street. A U-turn is permitted at 21st Street if heading north on Meridian.

Learn more about the rules of the road on the Red Line website, where you also can find helpful videos that explain the rules of the various sections of the bus route. A Red Line map can be found on the website.
