Fishers High School’s motto it “Have Pride, Show Character, Build Tradition,” and that motto shined brightly on April 28 when more than 4,000 students and staff took a break from their regularly scheduled classes and spent their day making the community a better place during their inaugural Day of Service. One of their projects came with a big public safety impact.

One of the top priorities of Citizens Energy Group’s Water Operations team is to ensure that all fire hydrants in our service area are operable. In order for local fire departments to be able to locate and access hydrants in an emergency, we also must ensure that hydrants are easily visible. When Amy Crell, Volunteer Coordinator for Community & Public Relations at Fishers High School, contacted Citizens about volunteering, Paul Dicken, Director Water Distribution, had just the project. “She and I brainstormed on an activity students and staff could do, and painting fire hydrants was an obvious choice.”

Employees from Citizens supplied students with everything they needed to paint the hydrants, including a quick tutorial from staff. By the time the Day of Service ended, students and staff had painted 400 hydrants.

“I am so proud of Fishers High School,” said Amy Crell. “It was such a lofty goal, and I am so impressed that they found opportunities for all of the students.”

Timmy Lawrence, sophomore class president and Day of Service committee member, shared, “Fishers High School has never done this before, and the idea of EVERY single student getting the chance to serve on one designated day appealed to me. Knowing it was the first Day of Service and that the plan is to keep doing it every year, I wanted to help my classmates do something they could be proud of while doing our part to help the City of Fishers remain a great place to live.”
