Citizens Energy Group and F.A. Wilhelm Construction participated in internship networking opportunities on July 2 and July 12 as part of Citizens’ Partnership for Excellence in Research and Learning (PERL) program.

Citizens interns joined Wilhelm interns on July 2 at the Lilly Research Center to learn about and tour a facility demolition and new construction projects.

The facility undergoing demolition was built in the early 1970s and was demolished rather than renovated because the structure was not able to be retrofitted to accommodate new processes and technology. Interns learned not only about the building demolition itself, but also about what the future holds for the site: Lilly recently decided to use the bare footprint as a green space for potential future development.

Interns also visited a different location within the Lilly campus selected to house a new building construction that will be used for clinical production and product storage.

Ten days later, Wilhelm interns joined Citizens interns at Langsdale, where Mike MillerManager Engineering, provided a detailed overview of the design and construction of the DigIndy Tunnel System.

The group then traveled to the West Street Deep Rock Tunnel Retrieval Shaft where they went 250 feet below the ground and received a tour from John Morgan, Construction Specialist, VI. Visiting the tunnel gave the interns an opportunity to see firsthand the sheer size and scope of the project.

About the experience, Wilhelm intern Tristin Andrews said, "Sharing these learning experiences with Citizens created an atmosphere of communal engagement among all of us students. The opportunities also fostered a sense of oneness as upcoming industry professionals."
