National Safe Digging Day is celebrated every August 11, to remind homeowners and contractors to always call 811 before digging. This month’s Q&A highlights Bob Edwards, Distribution Supervisor, Planning and Inspection, the self-proclaimed “811 Man,” who has a passion for educating the public about damage prevention.
When did your passion for damage prevention begin?
I began working at the Indianapolis Water Company while I was in college during the summer of 1978. My job was to locate water lines on East Washington Street, as well as walk around Monument Circle to look for any concerns involving the water main while the red bricks were being installed. I was hired as a full-time employee in 1980.
How do you support the work of Indiana 811?
For the past 10 years, I have participated in damage prevention council meetings for the Indiana 811 Central Chapter, and I have been a member of the Common Ground Alliance (parent organization of 811) Water and Sewer Advisory Board for the past six years. Each year, at the Common Ground Alliance conference, I participate in a Q&A panel discussion. I also am part of a Public Works Coordination Council, along with representatives from other local utilities, which meets regularly to discuss projects and work together to protect infrastructure.
Can you describe your 811 Man costume?
Two years ago I attended a damage prevention conference during the week of Halloween. Attendees were encouraged to dress in costume for the networking event. I could not think of any better costume than a damage prevention superhero. My 811 Man costume includes a cape and everyday personal protection equipment.
I was selected this summer as the 2019 “damage prevention hero” by DP Pro (Damage Prevention Professional) magazine, for which I have authored several articles.
How do you celebrate National Safe Digging Day?
I have participated in 811 Day at the Indiana State Fair and Victory Field, as well as a Damage Prevention Block Party in Carmel.
