SAFETY TIPS: Be Aware of the Dangers of Heat Stress

Advertisements for sports drinks often showcase top athletes and claim they would not be able to perform their best without these products, which contain electrolytes. With summer weather upon us, it’s important to stay properly hydrated just like professional athletes so we can perform at our best, whether we work or exercise outside in the heat.

  • Water is not enough. Electrolytes help fuel your body, and electrolyte imbalances inhibit the body from operating at its peak energy potential.
  • Symptoms of heat stress appear very similar to intoxication.  According to the National Institutes of Health, a body water loss of 1–2 percent can impair cognitive performance.
  • Once a person is affected by a heat-related condition, they become more susceptible to another heat-related condition in the future.

Prevent heat stress by following these tips:

  • Preparation: Prepare for the day by properly hydrating before you go outdoors and know the early symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
  • Prevention: If you work outside, schedule frequent breaks. Wear appropriate clothing and use the buddy system for heat awareness accountability.
  • Recovery: Rest at the end of every shift or workout. Make sure you get proper nutritional support and fully replace electrolytes to prepare for the next day’s demands.

Heat-related illnesses are preventable. As the temperature rises this summer, it is important to remind yourself and others about the dangers of heat stress to ensure that everyone goes home to their families both healthy and safe.
