The feet are like your body’s foundation. Poor footwear can lead to discomfort and fatigue in the foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back as well as possible injuries. Checking the integrity of your shoes daily can help determine the need for new or different footwear and may alert you to underlying medical conditions. Use the information below as a checklist.
Tread
- Tread should be only slightly worn. It should not be smooth or wearing into deeper layers.
- There should be little to no debris stuck in shoe tread. Clean off the soles often to reduce the chances of slipping.
Fabric
- The fabric or leather around the shoe should be intact.
Heel
- Heels should be even and only slightly worn. If heels are wearing unevenly, your foot could tilt inward or outward.
Insole
- Insoles should be even and only slightly worn. Insoles should not have holes or be peeling off.
