Have you started to plan your Thanksgiving dinner? Did you know there are typically three times as many home cooking fires on Thanksgiving as any other day? Practice safety both in the kitchen as you prepare holiday meals and outdoors as you hang decorations. Remember these tips to stay safe over the holidays:
- If you’re deep frying your turkey, make sure that the pot will hold both the bird and the oil and keep it well away from the house, garage or other flammables.
- If you’re going to put stuffing in the bird, remember to check the temperature of the bird and the dressing; both should be at least 165 degrees.
- Make sure pot and pan handles are over the range or cabinet, not sticking out into the room.
- Keep children out of the kitchen.
- Ladder safety is extremely important when putting up lights. Make sure the ladder is on level and firm ground.
- All outdoor receptacles should be protected by a GFCI outlet.
- Don’t drink and drive and don’t overconsume alcohol.
