Celebrating National Safety Month: The Journey to Safety Excellence

By Mandy Saucerman on 6/15/22 7:19 AM

Throughout National Safety Month (June), we are highlighting members of the Health, Safety, and Security team and the journeys that have led them to careers in safety.

At Citizens Energy Group, we have a rich history of building and maintaining a culture of safety. We are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable utility services to our customers and to providing a safe work environment for our employees. We also are focused on continuous improvement as an organization. As such, the Health, Safety, and Security department seeks opportunities to continuously enhance safety.

When the National Safety Council launched its “Journey to Safety Excellence” program several years ago, it outlined four key pillars that are critical to achieving safety excellence based on research as well as best practices of world-class organizations:

  • Leadership and employee engagement: Fostering a culture in which safety is fully integrated into the business and is a shared responsibility among all employees
  • Safety management systems: Setting a framework of processes and procedures to ensure tasks are completed and objectives are met
  • Risk reduction: Striving to reduce the likelihood of an event and the severity of the injury that may result
  • Performance measurement: Having measurable goals to track progress using leading and lagging indicators

Some key milestones in Citizens’ journey to safety excellence include adding safety components to our Short-Term Incentive Plan in 2003; formally adding Safety as a core value in 2007; and implementing safety training requirements for all employees in 2014.
