During the mid-October Trick or Tree event in support of the 10 Thousand Trees program, Citizens Energy Group employee Tommy Roper got the opportunity to plant a tree in front of the house he grew up in.
Roper, Gas Control Specialist, was one of 23 Citizens employees and several community members who planted 47 trees along Baltimore Avenue from 25th to 30th Streets.
“I wanted to participate in the tree planting in this area because I lived on Baltimore Avenue throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, and I still have many friends and family members living in this neighborhood,” said Roper.
As a supporter of the Girl Scout Tree Promise Program, Citizens also invited a local Girl Scout troop to participate in the planting. Across the country, Girl Scouts set a goal in April to plant five million trees in five years and to protect and honor new and existing trees.
Here in Indianapolis, the 10 Thousand Trees initiative, a partnership between Citizens, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, will result in the planting of 10,000 trees across the city to beautify neighborhoods and reduce combined sewer overflows to area waterways. The program is now nearly 75 percent complete.
