Citizens Energy Group teamed up with the Indianapolis Fire Department’s (IFD) recruit firefighters on Saturday, May 15 to clean and repaint 300 Citizens-owned hydrants.
Several Water Distribution employees participated in the “Badges for Burn Camp” event, a fundraiser for burn survivors to attend camp. Citizens provided the paint, brushes, and other supplies from its current inventory to freshen up the hydrants. As a result, money that IFD previously had allocated for outsourcing hydrant painting was donated to Hoosier Burn Camp.
IFD and Citizens have enjoyed a longstanding partnership and vested interest in optimally maintained hydrants, which are a life-safety necessity for IFD firefighters responding to a fire and the community. This project is an opportunity for firefighters to get a close-up look at the hydrants outside of an emergency situation and to learn more about the color-marking system and hydrants’ components.
Citizens also supports the annual Fire, Police, and Deputy Sheriff Awards by sponsoring the Firefighter of the Year Award. Learn more about that sponsorship and this year's Firefighter of the Year, Eric Sutton, who is also a meter reader for Citizens HERE.
