Citizens Energy Group has been the title sponsor of the annual Fire, Police & Deputy Sheriff’s Awards since 2012. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, in lieu of a large gathering honoring personnel from all three departments, each department held its own smaller awards ceremony in 2020 and 2021.
This spring, more than 30 local public safety professionals were recognized for their dedication and service to Central Indiana.
The recognition program began in 1968. By serving as the title sponsor of the event, Citizens continues the tradition of recognizing outstanding public safety personnel first established by the Indianapolis Water Company.
In addition to our sponsorship of the event, Citizens sponsors the Firefighter of the Year Award. We’re proud to report that the 2021 award was presented to Captain Eric Sutton. He has been on the Indianapolis Fire Department for 27 years, while also working as a meter reader for Citizens for the past 24 years.
Sutton’s nominator stated that he is genuine and compassionate and leads by example. Throughout the unexpected loss of several firefighters at his station, Sutton ensured support resources were available for his coworkers. In addition, he successfully mitigated several high-profile incidents.
Other notable winners were Officer Kenneth Kunz, Police Officer of the Year, and Major Michael Hubbs, Sheriff’s Deputy of the Year.
