Hit the Trails this Fall

Hiking is a great way to get fit and enjoy all the fall has to offer - cooler weather and a colorful backdrop as the leaves begin to change colors. Here are a few things to consider before you head out on a hike at your local or state park.

  1. Research the area you will be hiking, including terrain, conditions, local weather, and possible hazards, before you start.

  2. Decide on a route— including alternatives — and departure and return times. Share this information with others.

  3. Ensure your equipment, clothing, food, and emergency supplies are adequate for the duration of your hike. Bring along a GPS-enabled smartphone if you have one.

  4. Know your limits and be realistic. Monitor energy levels, physical comfort, and supplies. Stop if you start to feel you can’t complete the intended hike. Stay on your planned route.

  5. Avoid contact with unknown plants and wild animals.
