If reaching for an energy drink is part of your daily routine, consider this: a 16 oz. can of Red Bull contains 52 grams of sugar, about the same amount as 11 Oreo cookies. Even more concerning are the health damaging ingredients found in these drinks including excessive doses of caffeine and other stimulants that increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and can lead to irritability, anxiety, and an inability to sleep.

It's National Peach Month
By
Melissa Hehmann, RDN, CDE on 7/31/26, 3:47 PM
August is National Peach Month! Here’s all you need to know about the quintessential fruit of summer There’s nothing better than a juicy ripe peach in the summer, and that taste is why peach season is a favorite all over the United States. Peach season IS summertime, and the taste of a ripe peach is something most people crave in July and August. So, what is it about peaches that make them the quintessential fruit of summer? Here are some facts about peaches – and peach season. Peaches have lots of vitamins, especially Vitamin A and C. Peaches are a fat-free food. There are two types of peaches: Freestone and Clingstone. The Freestone peach is better for eating out of hand and is mostly what you find at farmer’s markets and grocery stores. The Clingstone peach is usually used in processing plants and commercial uses. Georgia is the state known for its peaches, but other states – like California – actually produce more peaches annually. More than 1 billion pounds of peaches are grown annually in the U.S. Peaches are picked by hand, as they bruise easily. August is National Peach Month. The average peach tree can produce more than 50 pounds of peaches in a season. It takes a peach about 4-5 months to mature and ripen. Peaches are harvested from the end of June until the end of August. Peaches come in three colors: White, yellow and red. Most peaches in the U.S. are yellow. Need to ripen a peach? Put it in a brown paper bag for a few days! Peaches are a member of the rose family and are “drupes” which mean they have hard stones or pits inside.

By
Melissa Hehmann, RDN, CDE on 7/31/26, 3:47 PM
Weighing yourself on a traditional scale only tells you one thing: your total weight. Body composition, on the other hand, gives you a much more detailed picture of your weight health because muscle is denser than fat. Someone with lots of muscle can weigh more than someone with a lot of extra fat, even though they look leaner.

Congratulations to Adam Lowe, a completely deserving Healthy Citizen! Adam joined Citizens Energy Group in February 2023. He took up running not long after and has since completed several 5Ks, 10Ks, and half marathons. In November 2025, he ran his first full marathon at the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon. He has persisted through lost toenails, a few falls, and all the other fun things that come along with distance running. Adam also consistently brings his lunch to work, setting a great example for those of us who aren’t as good about planning ahead.

It's UV Safety Awareness Month
By
Melissa Hehmann, RDN, CDE on 7/1/26, 3:01 PM
July is UV Safety Awareness Month. While sunshine is essential for your body to process vitamin D, ultraviolet (UV) radiation can quickly damage your skin, no matter your skin tone. Only about 5-30 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen a couple times per week is sufficient to produce adequate Vitamin D. People with lighter skin will only need the minimum and those with darker skin will need more time in the sun.

Men's Health Month - Focus on Mental Health
By
Melissa Hehmann, RDN, CDE on 5/28/26, 3:14 PM
There is often a strong focus on men’s physical health — fitness, annual checkups, and heart health — but mental well-being is equally as important because mental health is health! Just as the body needs care and attention, so does emotional and mental well-being. Yet, there is a silent crisis in men’s mental health — one that too often goes unnoticed or unspoken. Tragically, men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women*, underscoring the urgent need to break this silence and seek support.
